If there were a parental advisory label for fragrance, this publication wouldn’t be deemed suitable for noses younger than sixteen years of age. Smell the sweat of dancing guys all suited up in plastic. A golden turd as a talisman. A scent like a coitus or a perfume made from human fluids. What do bees register when they smell your breath? Take a sniff of the moon.

Smell is not just about what you feel is disgusting or nice. Smell forcefully sends a signal that immediately clears a way to our emotions and memories. Is it not strange that scent is only applied sporadically in media & communication design?

By means of text, images and scent, Sense of Smell shows the current and future possibilities of scent in media- and communication design. These range from revolutionary thought-experiments to products and services that we could currently implement.

This anthology brings the work of leading international olfactory artists, designers, thinkers and researchers together with concepts, experiments and prototypes by students and lecturers from the applied university for media and interaction design CMD, Breda.

Classified in five themes (Data, Temporality, Taboo, Perfumification and Ethereal) the book presents state of the art ways of thinking and products concerning scent and scent technology.

With essays by Marga van Zundert, Sanne Boesveldt, Caro Verbeek, Patricia MacCormack, Pinar & Viola, Mike de Jonge, IFF, Gün R. Semin and Rosi Braidotti.

Polymorf is a design collective based in Brabant, the Netherlands, creating multi-sensory experiences in the liminal space between art, theatre, design and science. Their innovative experiences are made for and with the human body, and center on the changing relationships between the body and technology and between society and technology. Speculations on possible futures form the basis for provocative experiences, concrete design solutions or new technologies. Their works have been programmed worldwide. Symbiosis recently won the Special Jury Award for Creative Technology at the IDFA DocLab Competition for Immersive Non-Fiction in Amsterdam.
