It was something close to a fit of giggles.
It wasn’t an unpleasant feeling.”

The word Ertussenuit has no direct English translation. It is a phrase that roughly means: ‘a day out’. And so we go, out for the day, with Sjoerd Knibbeler as our guide. This is a stroll through the zoos, spas, pools and paintball parks of the Netherlands where blue skies are murals and the trees have buttons. Ertussenuit is a collection of photographs from parks, museums, and recreational areas and gives us backstage access into the production of contemporary Dutch amusement.

Sjoerd Knibbeler is a visual artist living and working in Amsterdam. He explores the scientific quest to discover the world through an associative, process-driven approach to photography, deploying strategies like observation, experimentation and model making. The camera – in one form or another – is always present as a tool in his process, which materializes in printed matter, objects, video installations and artist books. His work is part of national and international collections like Maison Européenne Photographie, Kunst Haus Wien, Foam Photography Museum, Nederlands Fotomuseum and Museum Voorlinden. Knibbeler teaches at the Utrecht school of arts and is a member of the international photography collective piece of cake. He is represented by ROOF-A Gallery in Rotterdam.
